What is ASTM A213 T5 / ASME SA213 T5 Tube?
ASTM A213 T5 is a seamless ferritic alloy steel tube made in accordance with the ASTM A213 / ASME SA213 Standard Specification for Seamless Ferritic and Austenitic Alloy-Steel Boiler, Superheater, and Heat-Exchanger Tubes. The UNS code is K41545. At high operating temperatures, its 5 Cr–0.5 Mo (chrome-moly) composition provides outstanding resistance to oxidation, creep, and thermal fatigue.
ASTM A213 T5 corresponds to ASME SA213 T5 in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC). SA213 is preferred when the tube is included into ASME-code pressure equipment; both classifications have the same chemical and mechanical property standards. See also ourASTM A213 T9 Tubes andASTM A213 T11 Tubes for higher-alloy alternatives.
USA Piping Solution stocks and supplies ASTM A213 Gr T5 tubes with complete mill test reports (MTRs). Our exports reach North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. See our product catalog for additional grades of alloy steel seamless pipes.
ASTM A213 T5 Chemical Composition
The chromium-molybdenum composition of SA213 T5 material is tightly controlled. The 4–6% chromium range and 0.45–0.65% molybdenum give the tube its signature high-temperature oxidation resistance. Compare with our ASTM A335 P5 Pipes which share a similar Cr-Mo chemistry in pipe form.

Applications of ASTM A213 T5 Boiler Tubes
The high chromium and molybdenum content of SA213 T5 material makes it the preferred choice wherever sustained elevated-temperature performance is critical. Common applications include:
- Boilers & Superheaters — primary application for ASTM A213 T5 boiler tube in coal, gas, and nuclear power plants
- Heat Exchangers — shell-and-tube heat exchangers in refineries and chemical plants
- Petrochemical Plants — high-temperature process piping and heat recovery systems
- Power Generation — superheater and reheater tubing in thermal power stations
- Oil & Gas Refineries — hydrotreater, reformer, and crude distillation unit tubing
- Fertilizer Plants — ammonia synthesis reactors and heat exchangers. Related: ASTM A213 T22 Tubes for higher temperature service.

Frequently Asked Questions – ASTM A213 T5 Tubes
What is ASTM A213 T5 tube used for?
ASTM A213 T5 seamless tubes are used in boilers, superheaters, and heat exchangers in petrochemical, power generation, and refinery industries. Their 5% chromium and 0.5% molybdenum composition offers excellent high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance. See also ASTM A213 T9 Tubes for higher-chromium applications.
What is the difference between ASTM A213 T5 and ASME SA213 T5?
ASTM A213 T5 and ASME SA213 T5 are technically equivalent specifications. ASTM is the materials standard; ASME SA213 is adopted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for BPVC pressure vessel and boiler applications. Chemistry and mechanical requirements are identical.
What sizes are available for ASTM A213 T5 tubes?
ASTM A213 T5 tubes are available in outside diameters from 3/4 inch (19.05 mm) to 5 inches (127 mm), with wall thickness from 0.015 to 0.500 inches. Schedules range from SCH 20 through XXS. Custom sizes are available on request.
What is the chemical composition of ASTM A213 Gr T5?
ASTM A213 Grade T5 chemical composition: Carbon ≤ 0.15%, Manganese 0.30–0.60%, Silicon 0.50–1.00%, Chromium 4.00–6.00%, Molybdenum 0.45–0.65%, Phosphorus ≤ 0.025%, Sulfur ≤ 0.025%.
What are the mechanical properties of SA213 T5 material?
SA213 T5 material has minimum tensile strength 415 MPa (60 ksi), minimum yield strength 205 MPa (30 ksi), minimum elongation 30%, and maximum hardness 163 HBW.
Is ASTM A213 T5 a chrome moly tube?
Yes. ASTM A213 T5 is a chromium-molybdenum (chrome moly) ferritic alloy steel tube with UNS designation K41545. The Cr-Mo composition provides superior creep resistance and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. For pipes in the same alloy system, see our ASTM A335 P5 Alloy Steel Pipes.
