What the Standard Actually Covers
SAE J524 covers cold drawn and annealed seamless low carbon steel pressure tubing intended for hydraulic lines and other applications that need a tube good enough to flare and bend. Two words in that scope do the heavy lifting. Seamless means the tube was pierced from solid rather than rolled from strip and welded, so there is no longitudinal joint in the pressure boundary at all. Annealed, in this context, means a dead soft final anneal rather than a stress relief, and that is what buys the forming behaviour: a tube that takes a tight bend without wrinkling and a flare without splitting at the lip.

What is the difference between SAE J524 and SAE J525?
Construction. J524 is seamless; J525 is welded from strip and then cold drawn. Both are low carbon steel annealed for bending and flaring, and both serve the same hydraulic duty. J524 is specified where a drawing calls for seamless, where forming is severe, or where a weld in the pressure boundary is not acceptable.
Can SAE J524 tubing be double flared?
Double flaring and beading are the scope of SAE J356, which is normalized and flash controlled for exactly that. J524 is annealed for bending and single flaring. If your connection design uses a double flare, specify J356.
Is SAE J524 tubing the same as DOM tubing?
No. DOM tubing is welded and drawn over a mandrel; J524 is seamless. DOM is closer to J525 in construction, though the governing standards and intended applications differ.
What working pressure can SAE J524 tubing handle?
