What is Hastelloy C276 Tube?

Hastelloy C276 is a solid solution strengthened nickel based alloy which consists of predominant nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten. It offers superior resistance to pitting, crevice and stress corrosion cracking with its metallurgy despite complex chemical environments.

It is further identified as DIN 2.4819 according to European regulations and sold to the international market as Alloy C276. Similar trade names are NickelVac C-276, Nicrofer 5716, Boehler L276 and UNITEMP HN, which all denote the same UNS N10276 chemistry and the ASTM B622 specification. The verification of chemical composition against ASTM standards by the procurement teams should always be done without considering the trade name.

Why Hastelloy C276 Tubing is Preferred in Corrosive Environments

Hastelloy C276 tubing is widely selected for applications where conventional alloys fail due to corrosion or chemical attack. Key performance advantages include:

  • Outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion
  • Excellent performance in chloride-rich environments
  • Resistance to sulfuric, hydrochloric, and phosphoric acids
  • Superior stability in oxidising and reducing conditions
  • High resistance to stress corrosion cracking
  • Not recommended for continuous service above 677°C (1,250°F) — above this threshold the alloy can enter a secondary phase, reducing corrosion resistance in service

These characteristics make ASTM B622 Hastelloy C276 tubing ideal for continuous service in harsh chemical and thermal environments.

Hastelloy C276 Tubing Applications

Due to its exceptional corrosion resistance and mechanical reliability, Hastelloy C276 tubing is commonly used in:

  • Chemical processing heat exchangers
  • Acid handling and transfer systems
  • Oil & gas production and refining equipment
  • Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) ductwork and scrubber liners — used in US power utilities
  • Pollution control systems
  • Pulp and paper bleach plant equipment
  • Seawater heat exchangers and offshore platform piping
  • Pharmaceutical and specialty chemical plants
  • Waste treatment and high-temperature incineration systems
  • Nuclear fuel reprocessing components and power generation facilities
  • Chlorine production and handling equipment
  • Chemical processing plants across the Gulf region

Hastelloy C276 Tubing vs Other Nickel Alloys

Compared to other nickel alloys, Hastelloy C276 tubing offers a balanced combination of corrosion resistance and fabrication ease:

Comparison Key Distinction
C276 vs Inconel 625 C276 provides better resistance to reducing acids; Inconel 625 excels in high-temperature strength.
C276 vs Monel 400 C276 outperforms Monel 400 in chloride and mixed acid environments.
C276 vs Hastelloy C22 C22 offers slightly better resistance to oxidising media; C276 is more versatile across mixed corrosive conditions.
C276 vs Hastelloy C4 (UNS N06455) C4 offers improved thermal stability above 500°C due to reduced carbon and silicon content; C276 provides broader corrosion resistance across mixed acid and chloride environments at moderate temperatures.

Welding and Fabrication of Hastelloy C276 Tubes

Hastelloy C276 tubing is weldable by TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), and SMAW processes. The recommended filler wire is AWS A5.14 ERNiCrMo-4 (Alloy C276 filler). Excessive heat input should be avoided to minimise grain growth in the heat-affected zone.

Post-weld solution annealing is not required — the low carbon content (max 0.01%) prevents sensitisation at welding temperatures. Tubes intended for welded assemblies are available in pickled and annealed condition.

Packaging & Export Documentation

Hastelloy C276 tubes are supplied with plastic end caps and bundled in wooden crates or corrugated boxes with export-grade moisture barrier wrapping and silica gel packing. Each consignment includes:

  • Heat number traceability to ASTM B622 / B619
  • EN 10204 / 3.1 Mill Test Certificate (MTC)
  • Dimensional inspection report
  • Packing list and material identification tags

Standard sea and air freight shipments dispatched within 7–14 working days for stock sizes; fabricated or custom dimensions within 4–6 weeks.
