What Is Hastelloy C276 Tube?

Hastelloy C276 is a solid-solution nickel-based alloy with high molybdenum and chromium content, engineered for resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking across a wide range of aggressive chemical environments. It carries the DIN designation 2.4819 in European markets and is sold internationally as Alloy C276. Trade names for the same UNS N10276 chemistry include NickelVac C-276, Nicrofer 5716, Boehler L276, and UNITEMP HN; when sourcing against a trade name, confirm the UNS number and ASTM standard directly rather than relying on the name alone.

Why Hastelloy C276 Is Preferred in Corrosive Environments

  • Outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion
  • Excellent performance in chloride-rich environments
  • Resistance to sulfuric, hydrochloric, and phosphoric acids
  • Stable across both oxidizing and reducing conditions
  • High resistance to stress corrosion cracking

C276 is not recommended for continuous service above 677 deg C (1250 deg F). Above that threshold the alloy can enter a secondary phase that reduces corrosion resistance.

Hastelloy C276 vs Other Nickel Alloys

C276 offers a balanced combination of corrosion resistance and fabrication ease compared to other nickel alloys:

ComparisonKey Distinction
C276 vs Inconel 625C276 provides better resistance to reducing acids; Inconel 625 excels in high-temperature strength.
C276 vs Monel 400C276 outperforms Monel 400 in chloride and mixed acid environments.
C276 vs Hastelloy C22C22 offers slightly better resistance to oxidizing media; C276 is more versatile across mixed corrosive conditions.
C276 vs Hastelloy C4 (UNS N06455)C4 offers improved thermal stability above 500 deg C due to reduced carbon and silicon content; C276 provides broader corrosion resistance across mixed acid and chloride environments at moderate temperatures.

See our Inconel 625 Pipes & Tubes and Monel 400 Pipes & Tubes pages for the full spec on those alloys.

Welding & Fabrication

Hastelloy C276 tubing is weldable by TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), and SMAW processes. The recommended filler wire is AWS A5.14 ERNiCrMo-4 (Alloy C276 filler). Excessive heat input should be avoided to minimize grain growth in the heat-affected zone. Post-weld solution annealing is not required in most cases: the low carbon content (max 0.01%) prevents sensitization at welding temperatures. Tubes intended for welded assemblies are available in pickled and annealed condition.

Testing, Certification & Availability

Every order is supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate as standard, heat number traceable to ASTM B622 / B619, with 3.2 third-party witnessed certification available on request. Dimensional inspection is performed per ASTM B622 to an OD tolerance of +/-0.10 mm and wall thickness tolerance of +/-10%, with reports available on request. C276 tube is also compliant with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour service (H2S environment) applications. USA Piping Solution operates under ISO 9001:2015 and PED 2014/68/EU capability for EU project requirements; see our Quality Policy page for the full program. Standard stock sizes ship within 7-14 working days; custom or fabricated dimensions within 4-6 weeks. International shipment is available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

B622 covers seamless Hastelloy C276 pipe and tube; B619 covers the welded form. Both apply to the same UNS N10276 chemistry, the difference is production route, not alloy.
C276 is not recommended for continuous service above 677 deg C (1250 deg F). Above that threshold the alloy can enter a secondary phase that reduces corrosion resistance, so sustained higher-temperature service should be reviewed with your metallurgist.
Yes, we supply C276 in small-bore instrumentation and capillary tube sizes in addition to standard seamless, welded, and ERW tube.
