ASTM B247 components require specific tempers such as T4, T6, H112, and H111 respectively, as well as specific forging processes and mandatory testing such as tension, hardness, and chemical analyses.

As some aluminum alloys cannot be strengthened by heat treatment, manufacturing of these alloys derives the full set of mechanical properties through cold working. Cold worked properties not only enhance surface finish, but also improve control of dimensions and ensure that contamination is minimal, allowing the highest quality products, such as Aluminium 6061 Plate Flange, to be manufactured. The overall advantage of using these alloys is that their density is considerably lower than steel, making them the suitable and preferred choice of material for applications where the reduction of weight is important. The most common grades being used are 6061, 6082, 5083, and 3003, with the Aluminium 6061 Plate Flange being especially common for its good welding properties and a solid set of mechanical properties that are suitable for general fabrication of components for industry.
