ASTM A213 T22 Seamless Tubes are high-performance alloy steel tubes manufactured under ASTM International specification A213 (equivalent ASME SA 213 Grade T22). These tubes are engineered specifically for high-temperature, high-pressure service in boilers, superheaters, reheaters and heat exchangers.

The T22 grade derives its superior thermal resistance from a 2.25% Chromium – 1% Molybdenum (Cr-Mo) composition often called chrome-moly tube in the industry making it the preferred choice in power generation plants, petrochemical refineries and heat recovery systems operating at temperatures up to 650°C. The material is also known as Tuberia T22 in Spanish-speaking markets.

USA Piping Solution manufactures and exports ASTM A213 T22 Seamless Tubes in outer diameters from 6 mm to 168 mm with wall thicknesses ranging from 0.5 mm to 20 mm. All SA 213 Gr T22 tubes are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Reports and can be certified to NACE MR0175 and PED 2014/68/EU on request. Stock maintained in Mumbai, India — delivered globally within 7–15 working days.

What is ASTM A213 / ASME SA 213 T22 Tube?

ASTM A213 is the standard specification for seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy steel boiler, superheater and heat exchanger tubes. The T22 grade, also designated SA 213 Gr T22 under ASME, is a 2.25Cr-1Mo alloy recognised globally for its high-temperature creep resistance, oxidation resistance and long-term structural stability in critical thermal applications.

The specification governs chemistry, mechanical properties, heat treatment, testing and marking requirements. T22 boiler tubes must be supplied in the annealed or normalised-and-tempered condition and are subject to hydrostatic, flattening and flaring tests per the standard.

A213 T22 is often referred to as chrome-moly tube because of its chromium-molybdenum alloy base. Chromium raises tensile, yield and hardness at room temperatures and is virtually irreplaceable in resisting oxidation at elevated temperatures. Molybdenum increases the strength of steel, elastic limit, resistance to wear and hardenability — making the ASTM A213 T22 heat exchanger tube ideal for the most demanding refinery and power plant environments.

The Cr-Mo balance in ASTM A213 T22 is identical to ASTM A335 P22 Pipe, making T22 tubes the tubular counterpart for the same high-temperature service.

ASTM A213 T22 Heat Exchanger Tube Applications

T22 Boiler Tubes

ASTM A213 T22 boiler tubes are used in waterwall panels, economizers and evaporator sections of power plant boilers. The 2.25Cr-1Mo composition resists both internal oxidation and fireside corrosion. These T22 Boiler Tubes are used in high pressure, high temperature applications and are available in schedules SCH 20 through XXS. See also: ASTM A179 Cold Drawn Boiler Tubes for lower-temperature carbon steel alternatives.

T22 Superheater & Reheater Tubes

T22 superheater tubes handle steam at temperatures up to 650°C and pressures exceeding 200 bar in subcritical and supercritical boilers. The creep-rupture strength of SA213 T22 Superheater Tubes is superior to carbon steel and low-alloy alternatives at these conditions.

ASTM A213 T22 Heat Exchanger Tubes

ASTM A213 T22 heat exchanger tubes are specified in shell-and-tube heat exchangers in refineries and petrochemical plants where process streams exceed 450°C. They are compatible with hydrogen-rich environments when PWHT requirements are observed. The SA 213 T22 Heat Exchanger Tube is available in single random, double random and custom lengths.

Frequently Asked Questions — ASTM A213 T22 Tubes

What is ASTM A213 T22 tube used for?

ASTM A213 T22 seamless tubes are primarily used in high-temperature, high-pressure applications including boiler tubes, superheater tubes, reheater tubes, and heat exchanger tubes in power plants, oil refineries, petrochemical plants, and HRSGs. The 2.25Cr-1Mo alloy provides excellent creep strength and oxidation resistance up to 650°C.

What is the difference between ASTM A213 T22 and SA 213 Gr T22?

ASTM A213 T22 and ASME SA 213 Grade T22 refer to the same specification and material. ASTM A213 is published by ASTM International; ASME SA 213 is its adoption by ASME for pressure vessel and boiler code applications. Both require identical chemical composition and mechanical properties.

What is the UNS number for ASTM A213 T22?

The UNS (Unified Numbering System) designation for ASTM A213 T22 / SA 213 Gr T22 alloy steel is UNS K21590.

What are the chemical composition requirements for ASTM A213 T22?

Per the A213 T22 specification: Carbon 0.05–0.15%, Manganese 0.30–0.60%, Phosphorus max 0.025%, Sulphur max 0.025%, Silicon max 0.50%, Chromium 1.90–2.60%, Molybdenum 0.87–1.13%.

What are the mechanical properties of ASTM A213 T22 seamless tubes?

ASTM A213 T22 tubes have minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa, minimum yield strength of 205 MPa, minimum elongation of 30%, and maximum hardness of 163 HB, measured at room temperature in the annealed or normalised and tempered condition.

What is the maximum operating temperature for T22 boiler tubes?

ASTM A213 T22 / SA 213 Gr T22 tubes are rated for continuous service up to approximately 650°C (1,200°F), making them the standard choice for subcritical and supercritical boiler superheater and reheater applications.

What size range is available for ASTM A213 T22 seamless tubes?

USA Piping Solution supplies ASTM A213 T22 seamless tubes in OD 6 mm–168 mm, wall thickness 0.5 mm–20 mm, lengths up to 12,000 mm. SCH 40, SCH 80, SCH 160 and cut-to-length options available.

What are the international equivalents for ASTM A213 T22?

ASTM A213 T22 is equivalent to ASME SA 213 Gr T22 (USA), UNS K21590, DIN 10CrMo9-10 / EN 1.7380 (Germany/Europe), BS 3059 Grade 622-490 (UK), and JIS STBA 24 (Japan).

What certifications do ASTM A213 T22 tubes from USA Piping Solution carry?

All T22 boiler tubes are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Reports (MTR). NACE MR0175, PED 2014/68/EU, and IBR certification are available on request. Third-party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, or TÜV Rheinland can be coordinated on request.

Is ASTM A213 T22 the same as ASTM A335 P22?

They share the same 2.25Cr-1Mo alloy chemistry and are often referred to together as "chrome-moly" material. However, T22 refers to the tube product form (ASTM A213), while P22 refers to the pipe product form (ASTM A335). Heat treatment and testing requirements differ slightly between the two standards.
