A U-bend tube is a straight tube with a problem in the middle. Bending stretches the outer wall thinner and work-hardens the metal, so the finished tube is only as good as what the bending did to it, which is why serious U-bend specifications talk less about the tube itself and more about minimum wall after bending and post-bend heat treatment. The Two Things That Decide a U-Bend Order

  • Minimum wall after bending. The outer radius of the bend stretches, and wall thins there in proportion to how tight the bend is. Specifications therefore state a minimum remaining wall at the bend, and the correct move is to start with heavier wall stock than the straight legs need, not to hope the bend comes out thick enough. Tight radii need more starting wall.
  • Post-bend heat treatment. Bending leaves residual stress and work hardening in the U. In services prone to stress corrosion cracking, austenitic stainless in chlorides, copper alloys anywhere near ammonia, that residual stress is the crack initiation site. Stress relieving or solution annealing the bent region removes it. Many specifications make it mandatory; where they are silent, the service chemistry should decide.

Both points are worth settling before the enquiry rather than after, because they change the starting tube and the process route, not just the price.

Why U-Tube Bundles Exist

A U-tube exchanger has one tube sheet instead of two. Each tube enters and leaves at the same end, so the bundle is free to expand and contract with temperature without fighting the shell, which removes the expansion joint that a fixed-tubesheet design needs and removes the thermal stress problem along with it. The bundle also pulls out for shell-side cleaning. The trade-off is honest and worth stating: the tube-side of a U-bend cannot be mechanically cleaned around the bend as easily as a straight tube, so U-tube bundles suit clean tube-side fluids and dirty shell-side ones, which is exactly the reverse of what a straight-tube fixed bundle prefers.

What to Send With an Enquiry

U-bend orders are made to drawing rather than to stock, so the fastest quotes carry: base tube material and standard, OD and starting wall, minimum wall required after bending, bend radius (or the bundle layout that sets it), leg lengths, quantity per radius, and any heat treatment or NDE requirement. A bundle drawing carries most of that at once.

Testing, Certification & Availability

Base tube ships to its governing ASTM standard with mill certification and heat traceability; bent tubes are checked dimensionally, for ovality and wall at the bend, and pressure tested per the standard, with heat treatment records where applicable. Our Quality Policy page covers the full program.

How much wall thickness is lost in a U-bend?

It depends on the bend radius: tighter bends thin the outer wall more. Rather than estimating, specifications state a minimum wall required after bending, and the starting tube is selected heavy enough to meet it. Do U-bend tubes need heat treatment after bending?

In stress corrosion cracking service, yes. Austenitic stainless in chloride environments and copper alloys near ammonia are the classic cases, where residual bending stress becomes the crack initiation site. What is the tightest bend radius available?

Around 2 × tube OD is routine for most materials, with tighter radii reviewed case by case since they raise both the starting wall requirement and the case for post-bend heat treatment.
