SS 430 Operating Temperature Limits

  • Maximum continuous service in air: 870°C (1600°F)
  • Intermittent service limit: 815°C (1500°F)
  • Avoid prolonged exposure between 400°C–500°C: 475°C embrittlement of the ferritic microstructure occurs in this range, causing loss of toughness. Post-exposure annealing above 600°C can restore toughness.
  • SS 430 is not recommended for cryogenic service.

SS 430 vs SS 304 Tubes: Which Grade to Choose

SS 430 is a ferritic grade (16–18% Cr, no Ni) selected when cost, magnetic properties, and thermal cycling resistance matter. SS 304 (18% Cr, 8% Ni) outperforms in general corrosion resistance and weldability but costs significantly more and is non-magnetic in the annealed state.

Key differences:

(1) SS 430 has approximately 2x the thermal conductivity of SS 304, making it more efficient in heat exchanger applications.

(2) SS 430 is magnetic; SS 304 is typically not, relevant for MRI, sensor, and appliance OEM specifications.

(3) SS 430 is not recommended for environments with chloride exposure; SS 304 offers better resistance. Request samples and technical data sheets for side-by-side comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: Do you supply SS 430 tubes with a bright annealed (BA) finish specifically for appliance panel trim and refrigerator carcass fabrication?

A: Yes. We stock SS 430 tubes in BA finish suitable for appliance OEMs. BA finish improves surface reflectivity and corrosion resistance without further polishing. Custom lengths and slit widths are available on request.

Q2: We need SS 430 tubes for outdoor architectural cladding in a coastal city. Will Grade 430 hold up or should we upgrade to 316?

A: For direct marine exposure with salt spray, Grade 316 is safer. SS 430 suits sheltered coastal or inland atmospheric use. We can advise based on your exact site conditions and supply samples for pre-qualification testing.

Q3: What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for SS 430 tubes, and do you charge extra for cut-to-length
services?

A: Our standard MOQ is 100 kg. Cut-to-length is available with no extra charges on orders above 500 kg. Smaller trial orders can be discussed. We ship from US warehouses for fast domestic delivery.

Q4: Are your SS 430 tubes certified to ASTM A268? We need to submit material test reports to our client during a third-party inspection hold point.

A: Yes. All SS 430 tubes are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Reports referencing ASTM A268. Third-party 3.2 certification via SGS, TUV, or DNV is available on request at order placement.

Q5: Can SS 430 tubes be welded on-site? Our fabricator is asking whether pre-heat or post-weld annealing is mandatory.

A: Pre-heat at 150-200 C is recommended before welding SS 430. Post-weld annealing at 790-815 C relieves embrittlement in the heat-affected zone. We can supply technical data sheets and procedure guidance with your order.
