ASTM A519 Grade 1041 seamless tube is a resulfurized (free-machining) carbon steel mechanical tube manufactured to the ASTM A519 specification. Grade 1041 has the same medium carbon base chemistry as Grade 1040, but with a controlled increase in sulfur content and a substantial increase in manganese. These two elements provide the steel with different chip characteristics when machined, enabling Grade 1041 as the most common tube stock supplied for CNC screw machines, automatic turning centers and turning applications in the United States. It is available as part of our complete range of ASTM A519 Seamless Mechanical Tubing in all medium and low carbon grades.
USA Piping Solution typically supplies ASTM A519 Grade 1041 seamless tube in cold drawn (CDS) condition. The cold drawn process passes the tube through multiple die draws at room temperature to improve surface finish to close tolerances, crucial for applications in which very little stock needs to be removed in a subsequent CNC turning process to arrive at final part dimensions. For a complete description of the CDS process, tolerances and surface finish requirements for free-machining grades, please see our Cold Drawn Seamless Mechanical Tubing page.

1041 vs 1040 Comparison
The table below compares ASTM A519 Grade 1041 and ASTM A519 1040 Seamless Tube across all critical parameters. The comparison shows that the two grades share the same carbon range and therefore the same base strength potential. The difference lies entirely in manganese level, sulfur control, and the machining behavior that results from those additions.

ASTM A519 1041 Seamless Tube Applications
Grade 1041 tube is the material of choice wherever automatic or CNC screw machine operations dominate the production process. The combination of consistent chemistry, tight CDS dimensional tolerances, and free-machining sulfide inclusion structure makes it the standard stock for the following component categories.
- CNC screw machine components including shafts, pins, bushings, and collars produced on multi-spindle or single-spindle automatic screw machines
- Precision turned parts for hydraulic and pneumatic systems where bore concentricity and surface finish are critical
- Automatic screw machine stock for high-volume production of threaded fastener blanks, studs, and bolts
- Gear blanks and splined shafts in automotive driveline assemblies where the improved hardenability of the elevated Mn content is utilized
- Valve bodies and spool components in fluid control systems requiring close-tolerance turned bores
- Instrumentation components and sensor housings where dimensional consistency across a full bar or tube length is required
- Agricultural equipment components including pivot pins, link pins, and actuator sleeves produced on gang-tooled turning centers
Grade 1041 is not recommended for applications requiring welding as the primary joining method. The elevated sulfur content reduces weld ductility and can cause porosity in the heat-affected zone. For welded mechanical tube applications, Grade 1020 or Grade 1040 are preferred.
Other ASTM A519 Grades
The table below lists all grades available within our ASTM A519 Seamless Mechanical Tubing range. Grade 1541 is the companion resulfurized grade to 1041 and carries elevated manganese to 1.35 to 1.65 percent combined with a higher carbon ceiling. Review the ASTM A519 1541 Seamless Tube page for the detailed Mn-hardenability comparison between 1541 and 1041.
