Stainless Steel 317L Seamless Tubes Types
Why ASTM A213 Seamless is Mandatory for Certain SS 317 Applications
ASTM A213 TP317 covers seamless austenitic alloy steel boiler, superheater, and heat exchanger tubes exclusively. It does not apply to welded tubes. For SS 317L in boiler and superheater service governed by ASME Section I or pressure vessel service under ASME Section VIII, A213 seamless is the mandatory specification call out.
Beyond code requirements, seamless SS 317L seamless tube provides tighter OD tolerance of ±0.5% compared to ±1.0% for welded tube. This dimensional precision is critical for close tube sheet fit up in TEMA Class R heat exchangers, where the tube to tubesheet joint integrity depends on accurate OD sizing. Seamless production also eliminates the weld seam, removing any sensitization risk in the as delivered condition.
When ASME code does not mandate seamless and the application does not require tight OD tolerance, Stainless Steel 317 Welded Tubes under ASTM A249 offer a 20% cost saving with full hydrotest assurance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: ASTM A213 TP317 vs TP317L: which for heat exchanger tubes?
TP317L (0.035% C max) is preferred for heat exchangers involving welded tube to tubesheet joints. If the exchanger is fully seamless with expanded joints only, TP317 (0.08% C) offers marginally higher strength at temperature.
Q2: Is SS 317L seamless tube NACE compliant?
Yes. SS 317L seamless tube in solution annealed condition meets NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour gas service. We supply with NACE compliance certification and full material traceability on request.
Q3: Is dual certified 317/317L seamless tube available?
Yes. We offer dual certified SS 317/317L seamless tubes that meet both TP317 and TP317L chemistry and mechanical requirements on a single mill test certificate for maximum procurement flexibility.
