Cut the groove first. That is the G type's answer to the one weakness every wrapped fin shares: tension is all that holds an L foot to its tube, and tension relaxes as temperature climbs. A G fin instead sits in a machined groove, rolled shut around the fin base, so the tube itself grips the fin mechanically to roughly 400 degrees C. How Embedding Works: Groove, Wind, Lock
- Groove: a helical groove, typically ~0.25 mm deep, is machined into the tube's outer surface.
- Wind: fin strip is wound into the groove under tension, its base seated below the tube surface.
- Lock: the groove's edges are rolled back over the fin base, clamping it in a mechanical joint the fin can't back out of.
The consequence worth noting on the spec sheet: the groove removes a small amount of wall. G finning is therefore specified with base tube wall thickness that accounts for the groove depth, which is standard practice and one reason to give us the design pressure alongside the tube size.

Where G Fin Earns Its Premium
- High-Temperature Air Coolers: process streams entering hot enough to loosen wrapped fin.
- Cyclic Duty: batch processes and units that start and stop; the mechanical lock shrugs off expansion cycling.
- Heat Recovery Banks: exhaust and flue-gas recovery in the 250 to 400°C window, below H fin welded territory.
Below ~250°C and in steady duty, L type does the job for less; the G premium buys temperature headroom and cycle life.

Does the machined groove weaken the tube?
The groove removes a small, known amount of wall, and the design accounts for it: base tube wall thickness is selected so the remaining wall meets the pressure requirement. Send design pressure with your inquiry and the wall comes back correctly sized.
G fin or L fin for an air-cooled heat exchanger?
Steady duty below ~150–250°C: L family, it's cheaper. Hot inlet streams, cyclic operation, or anything approaching 400°C: G, because a relaxed wrapped fin quietly costs capacity for years before anyone notices.
Can G finned tubes use steel fins instead of aluminum?
Yes. Steel strip embeds the same way and extends both temperature and mechanical durability; aluminum remains standard where its conductivity and weight advantage fit the duty.
